Food Education

WHAT IS THE COOKING PROJECT?

Chef Daniel Patterson and I cofounded the Cooking Project in 2013. Our mission is to build self-reliance in youth by teaching fundamental cooking skills and empowering better food options longterm and on a budget. By focusing on delicious, inexpensive dishes from diverse regional traditions, our community of chefs, writers, home cooks and farmers seeks to demystify the culture of food, make good food more accessible, and equip young people to successfully take on challenges in the kitchen and out.

We partner with premier nonprofits like Slow Food SF, Bay Leaf Kitchen, Larkin Street Youth Services, JCYC, the Guardian Scholars Program and so many more to maintain a vibrant and diverse culture and community around food. These alignments represent a commitment to developing a holistic, immersive approach to food education through community, land and resources.  By visiting gardens and farms, addressing shopping and budgeting, practicing technical skills and discussing food studies concepts, young people and families are geared with the ability to feed themselves throughout their lives.
